Who Are Our Students?

Students who are recommended by guidance counselors to apply for Minds Matter as mentees are those who have demonstrated strong academic potential, high motivation and maturity, and a commitment to pursue a college education. Each student completes a rigorous application process, with select interviews. All Minds Matter mentees are students in Grades 10, 11, and 12.

 

In 2016-2017, the average Minds Matter student:

  • Has a 3.97 weighted GPA
  • Identifies as a student of color (91%)
  • Will be a first generation college student (78%)
  • Comes from a household with an annual income of under $30,000
  • Does not speak English as a first language (50%)
  • Is enrolled in at least 1 AP or Honors class

What Are The Requirements For A Student To Become A Mentee?

  • Enrolled in Grade 10 in the Denver area (and applies in Grade 9).
  • Qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
  • Maintains an overall grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  • Commits to attending Monday sessions from 6-8:30 p.m. throughout the school year.

What Are The Requirements For Students To Stay With The Minds Matter Program?

Minds Matter requires full attendance of its mentees throughout the school year. Additionally, all mentees must commit to attending academic summer programs after 10th and 11th grades (program lengths vary from 1 to 6 weeks).

At Minds Matter Denver, we look for students who:

  • Maintain a strong overall grade point average of 3.2 or higher
  • Are committed to pursuing a college education
  • Demonstrate strong academic potential, motivation, maturity, and responsibility
  • Are active in extracurricular and/or community activities (part time jobs included)
